CEFR assessment of real writing and speaking, A1 to C2

CEFRHub assesses the CEFR level of a real text or recording, in English or French: your own writing or speaking, not a multiple-choice test. AI analyzes it against the CEFR descriptors; the report arrives in under 3 minutes, with the sub-level and what supports it.

How does the assessment work?

In three steps: you describe the assessment, you submit a text or a voice recording, you read the report.

  1. Describe the assessmentA title and the language assessed: English or French.
  2. Submit a text or a voice recordingA file, a photo of handwritten work or typed text. For speaking, a recording made on the spot or an audio file. AI then analyzes it against the CEFR descriptors. If you want a topic, a task prompt for your level is offered.
  3. Read the reportThe detected level in under 3 minutes, the analysis by competence and the CEFR descriptors.

What's in the report?

A level that is justified, not just announced: the detected sub-level, three competences analysed separately and the matching CEFR descriptors.

  1. Your CEFR level from A1 to C2, with sub-levels (nine levels, including A2.1 to B2.2).
  2. A reasoned summary of what the production shows.
  3. Three competences analysed separately, with examples taken from the production.
  4. The descriptors quoted from the CEFR and its Companion Volume, then strengths, areas to improve and recommendations.
  5. A code and a PDF. Each evaluation is identified by a code, not by your name. The code lets you compare two assessments; the PDF is yours to keep or share.

What is the assessment based on?

On the descriptors of the CEFR and its Companion Volume, published by the Council of Europe. The method is published: you can read it before you try.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CEFR level test free?

Yes, to start: on CEFRHub, one written assessment is free every 30 days and one spoken assessment is offered once, with no credit card. After that, pay-as-you-go credits or a subscription.

How do I know my CEFR level?

By having a real piece of your writing or speaking assessed: write a text or record yourself, in English or French, and get your level from A1 to C2, with sub-levels, in under 3 minutes. The AI analysis is based on the CEFR descriptors, which the report quotes.

What CEFR level is considered fluent?

“Fluent” is not a CEFR level: its global scale describes “a degree of fluency and spontaneity” at B2, and expressing ideas “fluently and spontaneously” at C1 and “very fluently and precisely” at C2. The levels table above quotes the B2 and C1 sentences.

Where are my productions stored, and for how long?

Data stored and analyzed in Canada. The audio recording is never kept; for a personal account, only the result and the first 100 characters of the text are kept, for 2 years. Your content is not used for AI training.
